I recently submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to Amherst County requesting information regarding the county’s involvement with Region 2000.
Nearly four years ago, petitions were set out at a few area businesses serving the U.S. 60 West area.
With respect to the old Amherst Baptist Church building, I will agree it is "old." But it was deemed usable with new wiring, heating and other upgrades, so it is not "beyond repair."
I read in the Jan. 12 edition of the Amherst New Era-Progress a letter to the editor that included a suggestion concerning the old building that, at one time, housed the Amherst Baptist Church.
Are the department "heads" who work for Amherst County salaried or paid by the hour?

The Amherst County Public Schools Education Foundation hosted its ninth annual Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament at Winton Country Club.
This letter is regarding the article in the Amherst New Era-Progress, published April 27, “Amherst County Vets to get tax break.” I would like to make some clarifications.
In recent months, there have been several situations associated with the Amherst County Treasurer’s Office.
If you traveled through the lovely town of Amherst recently, you may have seen a display of bright, swirling pinwheels.
What is going on in Amherst County? I own several hundred acres of A1-zoned land with a long road frontage. The proposed zoning changes are, in effect, not a 3-acre minimum but a 6- to 8-10-acre minimum lot size, as evidenced by the sliding scale charge for the Agricultural District.
The members of the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department would like to extend a special thank you to all of the citizens, businesses, churches and civic groups for their most generous support of our department in 2010.
