Amherst shot putter Jericah Glover won the only state championship for this season’s outdoor Lancer track team with a 39-foot, 4.75-inch effort in Harrisonburg last Saturday.
Tyrease Brown won third place in the triple jump and was joined by 14 other Lancer athletes.
At the regional track championships on May 23 at Broadway High School, Glover had to settle for second place as R.E. Lee heavy thrower DaQuaa Scott won the title.
The Amherst track team traveled to Harrisonburg on May 29 to compete in the AA state track championships. The team stayed in a hotel, and Glover woke up well rested. “The bed was very comfortable,” he said.
Glover won the state crown on her first throw in the finals, beating Scott by two inches. When she realized she was the state’s best in her event, “I cried, my coach cried and my parents cried,” Glover said.
State track titles, however, are not new to the Glover household as her dad, Kenny Glover, and her two uncles, Elmer Glover and David Glover, won state championships in the high jump for Nelson County in the late 1970s.
The newly crowned champ wanted to thank her coaches –– including Keith Allamong from Brookville, who recently helped Glover improve her technique.
Others contributing to her success were her dad and Larry Hughes. “I also would like to thank Amherst coach Lance Carter for cheering me on,” she said.
Boys high jumper Anthony Rose won sixth place for the Lancer squad. Speedster Terrance Morse won seventh place in the 400 meter dash and 10th place in the 100 meter dash.
Other Amherst state competitors who did not finish in the top ten were Devonte Brown, Antwon Harvey, James Hutchinson, Demetrius Irving, Jaze Spardley and Anthony Ware, and among the girls, Candace Davis, LaCear Hubbard, Summer Johnson, Joni McGinn and Emily Moore.
