Daniel Roland Bower
Daniel Roland Bower, 73, of Tye River, died Dec. 5 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Shirley Juanita Collins Bower.
Born Jan. 6, 1935, in Mabscott, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Elmer and Helen Davis Bower Smith. He was a retired self-employed carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Phillip Bower; a brother, James Edward Bower; and a sister, Evelyn Bower Trivett.
Mr. Bower is survived by three sons, James David Bower and wife, Viola, Stephen Ray Bower and wife, Jessica, all of Tye River, and Daniel L. Bower of Locust Grove; one daughter, Juanita Lynn Bower of Amherst; one brother, Johnny Bower of Amelia; his stepmother, Irene Bower of West Virginia; six grandchildren, Craig, Jessica, Amy, Kora, Tyler and Julie; one great-grandchild, Jason Phillip; a half brother, George Smith; and half sister, Marie Croxford, both of Richmond.
A graveside service, with military honors by American Legion Post 16, was conducted Dec. 9 in Woodland Baptist Church Cemetery, Colleen, by the Rev. John Ray Bower.

Eloise Wiley Coleman
Eloise Wiley Coleman, 91, of Lynchburg, died Dec. 3. She was married for 56 years to the love of her life, Roy Clyde Coleman Sr., who predeceased her 18 years ago. Mr. Coleman was a 55-year employee of The News and Advance.
Mrs. Coleman was born June 29, 1917, in Amherst County, a daughter of the late Jasper Bruce Wiley and Lura May Wilkerson Wiley. She was a doctor’s assistant for Drs. Stoll, Ashworth, Podosek and Stowers, prior to her retirement. She was an active, lifelong member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church. She lived all of her life in Lynchburg, and though she was a dedicated employee and was faithful to her church, her love of family was her focus in life.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn Coleman Mathews, Richard Douglas Coleman and wife, Kirsten, and Roy Clyde Coleman Jr. and wife, Sara; her grandchildren, Deborah Pitts, Kim Jackson, Robert Mathews, Lori Overstreet, Tina Stanley, Keith Coleman, Kirsten (Mitzi) Teany, Diana Harris, Jason Coleman and Roy Clyde Coleman III; her great-grandchildren, Corey and Kelly Pitts, Angela, Robert and Mathew Moore, Samantha and Scott Mathews, Brittney and Christopher Overstreet, Taylor and Ethan Stanley, Kallie and Kenley Coleman, Madeline and Allison Teany, and Logan and Zachary Harris; and her great-great-grandchildren, Alexander Moore, Waylon Hall and Emily Pitts.
The family received friends Dec. 6 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service followed with the Rev. Janet Hawkins officiating. Interment followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Jacob Tyler Edwards
Jacob Tyler Edwards, 10, of Pumping Station Road, died Nov. 29 at MCV Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Lynchburg on Nov. 1, 1998, he was the son of Angie Jamerson Edwards and Russell Junior Edwards, both of Appomattox.
Jacob was kind and loving, and was a hero, but most of all he was a blessing to everyone who knew him. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a fourth grade home school student.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Savannah Cheyenne (Toota) Edwards of Appomattox; a half brother, Zack Edwards of Lynchburg; maternal grandmother, Linda Jamerson of Appomattox; and paternal grandmother, Ruby Edwards of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Cecil Wayne Jamerson and Russell Edwards Sr.; half brother, Joshua Edwards; and his best buddy, Joshua Thomas.
Funeral services were held Dec. 3 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Howard Rosen Jr. Burial will follow in the Jamerson Family Cemetery.

Margaret Sale Hendrick ‘Gram’
Margaret Sale Hendrick, 87, formerly of Woodbridge, passed away Dec. 4 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late James Bruce Hendrick.
Born Jan. 5, 1921, in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Meyers Sale and Lois Stinnette Sale. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Lee Hendrick, and two brothers, Roy C. Sales and Oleon M. Sale.
Margaret was a homemaker and a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be greatly missed by her family. She was a past member of Woodbridge Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Carolyn H. Cocho of Madison Heights and son-in-law, John E. Cocho, of Nanty Glo, Pa., and Judy H. Vanhutton and husband, Mark, of Stafford; a brother, Oscar M. Sale Jr. of Dinwiddie; a sister, Jean H. Gardner of Madison Heights; three grandchildren, John Tracy Cocho and wife, Kelley, of Fredericksburg, Kimberly Cocho of Madison Heights and Jacob Vanhutton of Stafford; four great-grandchildren, Kaila, Shannon, John and Noelle; special neighbor and friend, Liane Payne; and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was conducted Dec. 6 at Midway Baptist Church by the Rev. Hugh Bumgarner and the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton, with burial to follow in Mt. Pleasant UMC Cemetery. The family received friends Dec. 5 at Heritage Funeral Service and other times at 170 Chapel View Drive, Madison Heights.

Frank Leonard Inge
Frank Leonard Inge, 80, of Monroe, died Dec. 2 at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Martin Inge for 64 wonderful years.
Born in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Frank Leslie Inge and the late Elizabeth Steen Inge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Tommy Smith.
Frank was retired from Consolidated Shoe Co. after 26 years of service and he had worked for the Southern Railroad Co. for 14 years. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, L. Dudley Inge and his wife, Jeannie, of Monroe and Robert Inge and his wife, Debbie, of Lynchburg; one daughter, Florence I. Smith of Monroe; one brother, Harold Inge and his, wife, Sue; two sisters, Lillian I. Ford of Monroe and Hilda Hubbard and her husband, Freddie, of Madison Heights; seven grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Dec. 6 in Amherst Cemetery by Pastor Steve Amburgey.
The family received friends Dec. 5 at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.

Magdalene Cox Mallory
Magdalene Cox Mallory, 94, of Rochelle passed away Dec. 11 at the Dogwood Village of Orange.
She was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Spotsylvania County, the daughter of the late Joseph J. and Mary A. Adkins Cox. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie B. Mallory Sr.; and six brothers, Luther, James, Jesse, Edward, Alvin, and Ernest Cox.
Mrs. Mallory was a member of Bethel Methodist Church in Rochelle and a former weaver at the American Silk Mill in Orange.
Survivors include a son, Willie B. Mallory Jr. and his wife, Norene, of Orange; a sister, Edith Chewning of Spotsylvania; step grandsons, Stephen Phillips and his wife, Anne, of Guyton, Georgia, Stewart Phillips and his wife, Rachel, of Huddleston, Shawn Phillips and his wife, Alicia, of Madison Heights, Virginia, and Shannon Phillips and his wife, Teresa, of Concord, North Carolina; 10 step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were Dec. 13 at the Graham Cemetery in Orange with the Rev. Henry Daniel Aylor officiating.

Samuel Judson Turner
Samuel Judson Turner, 69 of Lexington, died Dec. 21, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born May 18, 1939, in Naola. Samuel was the son of the late Wilbur and Myrtle Tanner Turner.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; two daughters, Wanda Turner and Kimberly T. Bane and husband Dewayne; three grandchildren, Dakota, Logan and Christina; two brothers, Wilbur and William Turner, of Madison Heights, and a very special friend, Wanda Wright, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Nell Turner.
Burial was in the Turner Family Cemetery in Naola on Dec. 24.
Samuel Clarence Wood
Samuel Clarence Wood, 79, of Madison Heights, passed away Nov. 13 at his residence. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life for 57 years, Marian Campbell Wood.
Born in Bedford, he was the son of the late Samuel Norman Wood and the late Minnie Nichols Wood. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Clyde Wood and David M. Wood, and a sister, Dorothy W. Eubanks.
Clarence logged timber for 18 years and was the president and owner of S.C. Wood Landscaping Inc., where he retired. He loved to go out west for hunting, fishing, raising cattle on his farm and traveling. He was a member of the Light House Baptist Church and he helped start Faith Baptist Church.
He never met a stranger and he will be sadly missed by all of the many people to whom he brought laughter and smiles.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Clarence Eugene Wood and Thomas George Wood, both of Madison Heights; one daughter, Deborah W. Wills and her husband, Barry, of Madison Heights; nine grandchildren, Stephanie W. Tomlin and her husband, M.T., of Madison Heights, Jennifer Ann Wood, of Appomattox, Tamara Darlene Wood, of Las Vegas, Nev., Savannah R. Wood and Tristan S. Wood, both of Madison Heights, Erica M. Willoughby, Tabitha W. Miller and her husband, Bobby, Christopher Willoughby and Barry S. Wills, all of Madison Heights; three great grandchildren, Bryson Tomlin, Brooke V. Tomlin and Angela E. Willoughby, all of Madison Heights; one brother, Clayton Saunders Wood and his wife, Marion, of Madison Heights and two sisters, Norma W. Stinnette and Gloria W. Brightwell, both of Madison Heights.
The family expresses special thanks to Dr. John MacNeill and his staff and to Becky Cox of Hospice for the wonderful care they gave him.
A funeral service was conducted Nov. 17 at Faith Baptist Church by the Rev. Harlan W. Cooke and the Rev. Jack W. Finch. Interment followed at Meade Cemetery.

Custis Carter Wright
Custis Carter Wright, 95, of Lakewood Retirement Community, died Nov. 30.
She was a native of Amherst County. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Tyree Lawson “Bud” Wright, of Richmond; her two daughters, Betsy Shires of Richmond, and Susan W. Faulconer, and husband, Mark, of Madison Heights; and three grandchildren, Emily Lawson and husband, James Williams, of Atlanta, Ga., and Charles Cash and William Cash of Madison Heights.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Custis Wright was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College with a B.S. in Chemistry. She taught in Amherst County schools and was a chemist for American Cyanamid Co. in Piney River.
