School Board seats filled

The Amherst County Board of Supervisors made two appointments to the county’s school board last week.

After privately interviewing six people who applied for two at-large seats on the seven-member board, supervisors reappointed Gloria Walker and appointed William Brown. Supervisor Don Kidd was absent from the interviews and votes.

Walker, a reset specialist at Advantage Sales Marketing and Acosta Marketing, will enter her third term on the board in July.

Brown, a retired doctor who now works as a real estate agent for Blue Ridge Realty, will take over the seat held by Margaret Leggett, whose term expires this month.

Each has children who have attended Amherst County Public Schools.

County Administrator Rodney Taylor said the county was fortunate to have such a high level of interest.

Vernon Wood, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said Walker has done a great job in serving the schools and Brown has an impressive knowledge of the county.

“He brings a community spirit,” Wood said. “I think people will relate to him.”

In recent interviews with the Amherst New-Era Progress, both said they were eager to serve.

“I’ve enjoyed it,” Walker said of her chance to serve. “I’m glad the Board of Supervisors gave it to me.”

“I really love Amherst County and I love the kids,” Brown said. “I want to see the school system improve for their benefit.”
