Art meters to be shown on South Main Street

The Town of Amherst’s “art meters” will be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. July 8 at the mini park on South Main Street across from Town Hall.

Artists have refurbished 20 parking meters for what will be a public art project.

Each meter has been sponsored by a business, organization or individual, and the works were juried, said the coordinator, Suny Monk, executive director of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

This year’s inaugural theme is “My Favorite Thing About Amherst.”

Organizers hope to switch the meters yearly.

The project began last year when organizers came up with the plan as a way to beautify downtown Amherst.
