Jacob Joseph Bond ‘Jake’

Jacob Joseph Bond, “Jake,” 68, of Nelson County, went home to be with his Lord on Jan. 17 at his home in Piney River. Born March 28, 1941 he was a son of the late Emile Markle and Shirley Campbell Bond. Jake was a lifelong member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He was employed by American Cyanamid, Mead Paperboard, which later became Rock-Tenn in Lynchburg, and finished his working career at Buffalo Air Handling until retirement. After retirement, Jake enjoyed his most favorite pastimes: fishing, farming and spending time with his wife, family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Alma Grace Mawyer Bond; two daughters, Pettis J. Bond, of Lynchburg, and Paula B. Nash and Chris, of Troutville; one sister, Barbara Brown and Peyton, of Charlottesville; two aunts, Hope Proffit, of Arrington, and Hazel Woodson, of Troy; two granddaughters, Egan and Cate Nash of Troutville; one grand-godson, Shrader Tomlin, of Lynchburg; six nieces and nephews, Tina Leiter and Allen, of Keswick, Mark Bond and Susan, of Charlottesville, Donnie Jr. and Bobbie Mawyer, of Lynchburg, Meredith Mawyer of Faber and Brittany Graves, of Amherst; and numerous other loving cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Emile Markle Bond Jr. and one niece, Virginia Mae Bond Marrs.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Raymond Rowley and the Rev. C. Randall Harlow, with burial in the church cemetery. Family rreceived friends at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.

Morgan Leigh Dobyns

Morgan Leigh Dobyns, 15, of Appomattox, passed away on Jan. 19.

Born April 15, 1994, daughter of Dennis L. Dobyns of Lynchburg, and the late Laura Dobyns Sipe of Appomattox; step-daughter of Sandra Dobyns and the late Dwayne Sipe; sister of Collin Dobyns and fiancée, Megan Spradlin, of Lynchburg; step-sister of the late Joshua Sipe, David and Alisha Sipe of Douglasville, Ga.; granddaughter of the late Susan Gramelt, Christine and William Magann of Lynchburg, Gary and Sarah Dobyns of Concord; niece of Crystal and Tim Trent of Madison Heights, Mason and Pat Harrup of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Laura Magann of Lynchburg; and great-grand-daughter of Violet Giglio and the late John Giglio of Marietta, Ga.

Morgan loved to cook and bake and was looking forward to taking culinary arts classes at school next year. She loved animals and skating with her friends. Everyone was drawn to her vibrant personality.

Morgan was loved by many friends and family and has taken a part of us all with her.

A funeral service was conducted Jan. 24 in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service by the Rev. John Williamson.

The family receivd friends Jan. 23 at Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Road.

James A. ‘Griff’ Griffin IV

James A. “Griff” Griffin IV, 62, of Madison Heights, passed away on Jan. 22. He was the devoted husband of Patricia Paris Griffin for 38 years.

Born March 23, 1947, in Bridgeport, Conn., he was a son of the late James A. Griffin III and Virginia Dickerson Griffin and attended Madison Heights Baptist Church.

He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He loved people and used his humor and friendly advice to make the best out of any given situation. He could put a smile on anyone’s face.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James A. “Bert” Griffin V, and his wife, Lauren, of Hamilton, N.J., a granddaughter, Riley B. Griffin, a daughter, Tiffany Dawn Griffin of Salt Lake City, Utah; two brothers, Jeffrey Griffin of Florida, Thomas Griffin of Lynchburg; two nieces, Paris and Stacy and two nephews, Sam and Jake

A celebration of his life was held Jan. 25 in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service. The family received friends afterward.

Frank James Hill

Frank James Hill, 87, of Lynchburg, died Nov. 30. He was the husband of the late Lucille Hartless Hill with whom he shared his love and life.

Frank was born March 9, 1922, in Lynchburg, a son of the late Jesse James Hill and the late Nellie Maude Coles Hill. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II. As owner of House of Portraits, Frank took great pride in his work and was well known in Lynchburg and the surrounding area for his wonderful photography. After his retirement, he joined Tharp Funeral Home in 1995 as one of Tharp's first employees, serving faithfully using his many talents. Throughout his career he was a true professional with a gentle heart. Frank was an avid gardener. A true Southern gentleman as well as a gentle man, Frank delighted his family and friends with his wonderful skills in cooking and was quite talented using a sewing machine. A member of Mended Hearts, for many years Frank volunteered at Lynchburg General Hospital and was a longtime member of Park View United Methodist Church.

Frank is survived by a sister, Janie Hill Everhart; four sisters-in-law, Maymie H. Terry of Richmond, Edith H. Coffey of Lynchburg, Ann H. Hall and husband, Bill, of Madison Heights and Kaye Hartless of Lynchburg; and a special niece, Kimberly H. Alexander of Lynchburg. In addition to his family, Frank had many good friends and neighbors.

A celebration of Frank’s life was conducted Dec. 5 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating. The family received friends following the service.

Clayton Odell Wilson Sr.

Clayton Odell Wilson Sr., 75, of Lynchburg, died Nov. 29 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Phyllis Jeanine Foster Wilson.

Born in Lynchburg on Dec. 4, 1933, he was a son of the late Archie A. Wilson and Alma Smith Wilson. He was a retired builder.

He is survived by one son, Clayton O. (Dale) Wilson Jr., and his wife, Debbie, of Lynchburg; three daughters, Debbi Renee Creasy and her husband, Irvin, and Angie Moses and her husband, John, all of Lynchburg, and Robbin Wilson Lawrence and her husband, Robert, of Evington; one brother, Henry Wilson of Madison Heights; three sisters, Faye W. Mays of Lynchburg, Johnsia W. Ward of Gretna and Sandra W. Wooldridge of Forest; seven grandchildren, Whitney B. Wilson, Courtney J. Wilson, Kristopher C.W. Creasy, Kristyna C.W. Creasy, Michael S. Cain and his wife, Pam, Bobby L. Cain and John R. Moses Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Haley E. Cain and Emily R. Cain; a sister-in-law, Ardella F. McHugh, and her husband, Pete, of Lynchburg; nephew, Kirk McHugh, and his wife, Kristie, of Lynchburg; brother-in-law, Derrell Foster, and his wife, Lynn, of Lynchburg; and many other nephews and nieces. He was also survived by his beloved pet, Montana.

A funeral service was conducted Dec. 2 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment followed in Virginia Memorial Park with military honors by the American Legion Post 16. The family received friends Dec. 2 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the American Lung Association.
