Clinton Julius Arrington
Clinton Julius Arrington, 83, died Aug. 30 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Theora Iseman Arrington.
Born Sept. 19, 1926, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late John Lucas and Christine Lawhorne Arrington. He was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church and a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by a son, Larry Arrington, and wife, Kellie, of Amherst; five daughters, Betty A. Evans and husband, Ronnie, of Amherst, Susan A. Parks and husband, Bob, of Suffolk, Debbie A. Campbell and husband, Randy, of Amherst, Laura A. Campbell and husband, Frankie, of Amherst, and Tina Robbins, of Lynchburg, four sisters, Thelma Pomeroy, Rovina Campbell, Madeline DeChant and husband, Harold, and Alice Martin, all of Amherst; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and Melvin Arrington, and two sisters, Lorrene Beasley and Marie Andrews.
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 1 at the Blue Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Allan Monfils and the Rev. Bob Parks officiating. Burial followed in the Amherst Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 16 of Lynchburg.

Dorothy Estelle Johnson Arthur
Dorothy Estelle Johnson Arthur, 95, of Coleman Falls, died Sept. 3 at The Oaks of Lynchburg after a long illness. She was born in Amherst County on April 22, 1915.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nickodemus Arthur; her parents, Ida Loving Burleigh Johnson and John Houston Johnson; her brothers, Louis Waddell Johnson and James Duvall Johnson; and her sister, Kathleen Johnson Proffitt.
She is survived by her half-sister, Joanne Johnson Wyatt (Henry); her nieces, Helen Johnson Leach (Harry), Patricia Johnson Beck, Martha Johnson Kirchmier (Stan) and Wendy Sprinkle Akers (Billy); her nephews, Randolph Neal Sprinkle (Vicky) and Mark Edward Sprinkle (Kathy); her great nieces and nephews; and her friends.
She attended Longwood State Teachers’ College and taught school for several years in Amherst County before her marriage.
Dorothy Arthur delighted in raising cattle and chickens and having a garden on her farm.
A graveside service was conducted Sept. 7 at Cove United Methodist Church in Coleman Falls by Pastor Sue Keen.

Virginia Godwin Moses Babcock
Virginia Godwin Moses Babcock, of Appomattox, our loving and devoted Mother, Granny, Granny Ginny, Sister, Sis Gin and friend, passed away Sept. 2 at Babcock Manor. She was the widow of Harold Webster Babcock Sr., who died Feb. 10, 1999. They were married for 61 years.
Mrs. Babcock was born in Appomattox County on Sept. 14, 1920, to the late Senator Charles Thomas Moses and Mary Virginia Godwin Moses.
She is survived by her son, Harold Webster Babcock Jr., and his wife, Barbara, of Amherst; her daughter, Patricia Babcock House, and her husband, Marvin, of Appomattox, and Pat’s sister, Gaye Keiffert, of Waynesboro; her grandchildren, the special lights of her eyes, Traci P. Horne and husband, Mike, of Forest, B. H. Paulette III, of Appomattox, M. J. House III and wife, Amy, of Appomattox, and Susan H. Gardenhour and her husband, Joey, of Springfield; step-granddaughter, Dawn Thrasher, and husband, Ed, of Madison Heights; step-grandsons, Tony Williams and wife, Shannon, and David Williams and wife, Tammy; her great-grandchildren, who were the apples of her eyes, Morgan Bryn, Madison Anne and Courtney Virginia Horne, of Forest, Grant Mason and Grace McKenzie Paulette, of Appomattox, Adam Colby and Patrick Carrington House, of Appomattox, and Joseph Conner and Carley Elizabeth Gardenhour, of Springfield; her sister and best friend, Clara Whitney Herndon, of Brookneal; and her sister-in-law, Rachel Babcock, of Amherst.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Moses Lusardi; her brother, Charles T. Moses Jr.; and a special aunt, Nettie Moses Dresser Martin.
Virginia was a graduate of Appomattox County High School and received her B.A. from Lynchburg College in 1969 and her Masters in Education in 1971 from the University of Virginia. She taught school in Clifford and served as a probation counselor and supervisor for the 24th Judicial Juvenile and Domestic Relations Circuit Court systems in Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Charlotte counties for 10 years, followed by 16 years with the Appomattox Department of Social Services, where she retired as Executive Director in 1987. She served on the State Department of Mental Health and Retardation and Substance Abuse Services Board being appointed by Governor Wilder.
Virginia always worked for the betterment of her town, surrounding community, State and Nation. As a member of many different organizations, she worked to promote patriotism, good citizenship, preservation of our history and beautification of our nation. She never hesitated to call anyone from Appomattox to Richmond to Washington to let her views be known. If anyone called Virginia needing help, she was always willing to help.
In 1987, she served on the board for the Appomattox Chamber of Commerce; from 1975 to 1982, she served on the Central Virginia Community Service Board; from 1988 to 1991, she served on the Central Virginia Commission on Aging; from 1989 to 1992, on the Central Virginia Long-term Care and Nutrition Committee; from 1989 to 1991, on the Central Virginia Community Service Board Legislative Committee for Long Range Planning; and from 1987 to 1989, on the Central Virginia Crisis Line.
Before her decline in health, she was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Appomattox, where she taught Sunday school from 1960 to 1980 and was a member of the Life Lighters Circle. She was also a member of the Appomattox Woman’s Club, Appomattox Garden Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation Auxiliary, Appomattox County Historical Society, Appomattox Volunteers and she was an organizing member of the Red Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She loved her home “Charmos” and enjoyed entertaining there for her family and various organizations.
Funeral services were held Sept. 5 in Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joseph Lotts. Burial followed in the Babcock Family Cemetery. The family received friends Sept. 4 at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family gives a special “Thank You” to all the staff of Babcock Manor for all their loyal support and love given to Virginia and they extend a heartfelt “Thanks” to her special caregiver, Barbara Hensley, who was so faithful to her and always by her side. They would also like to thank her hospice nurse, Beverly Davis for all the wonderful care given by her.

Harriet Warrick Boykin
Harriet Warrick Boykin departed this life Aug. 26 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born in Amherst County on Oct. 16, 1918, the daughter of the late William and Carrie Blair Warrick. She was the wife of the late John A. Boykin.
She joined the Union Hill Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful servant until her health failed.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Annie Warrick Jordan and Carrie Warrick Rucker.
She leaves to mourn her loss two nieces and five nephews, Deacon Webster Warrick (Gertrude), of Lynchburg, Carson Warrick (Gail), Janice Sparrow, Shirley Sparrow and Malcolm Rucker (Jeanette), all of Amherst, John N. Blacksmon and Dr. Bobby Blacksmon, both of Maryland; a host of great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Francis, of Maryland; three special friends, Martha Ferrell, Lucy Ross and Terry Hunter (Julia); and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was conducted Aug. 29 at Union Hill Baptist Church, Amherst, with the Rev. Jesse J. Johnson Sr. officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery. Her remains were in state at the church prior to the service. The family received friends and the cortege assembled at 109 Kingcade Drive, Amherst.

Claudia Nash Campbell
Claudia Nash Campbell, 66, of Lynchburg, passed away Aug. 26 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Howard William Campbell for 37 years.
Born March 7, 1944, in Appomattox County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Thomas Nash and Elsie Phelps Nash and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy East and Joan Cheatham. She retired from the Central Virginia Training Center after 31 years of service and was a member of Campbell Avenue Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother, Charles “Dave” Nash, and wife, Fredda, of Lynchburg; two uncles, Twyman Phelps and wife, Mary, of Appomattox, and Rice Phelps and wife, Faye, of Madison Heights; one aunt, Belle Lindsey, of Lynchburg; one brother-in-law, Herman P. Cheatham Jr.; seven nieces and nephews; 15 great-nieces and nephews; special friend, Delores Elliott, of Lynchburg; and a special pet, “Trixie.”
A funeral service was conducted Aug. 28 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel, with Dr. Reed Ness officiating. Interment followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family received friends Aug. 27 at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Carolyn Lloyd Casey
Carolyn Lloyd Casey, 56, of Amherst, died Sept. 11 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born Aug. 28, 1954, in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late William Ross Lloyd Jr. and Mildred Elizabeth Burks Lloyd.
Carolyn was a housekeeper for the Central Virginia Training Center.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger L. Lloyd and William Eugene Lloyd, and one sister, Nancy Louise Lloyd.
Carolyn is survived by one son, Brian Casey, and one daughter, Melissa Casey, both of Amherst; one brother, Warren Lloyd, and his wife, Teresa, of Rustburg, three sisters, Pamela Campbell, Judith Yancey and Agnes Wade Kirk, all of Amherst; sisters-in-law, Marion F. Lloyd, of Madison Heights, and Jeanette C. Lloyd, of Amherst; and two granddaughters, Sarah Lynn Casey and Megan Elizabeth Casey.

John Stuart Dodson Sr.
John Stuart Dodson Sr., 60, of Lynchburg, died Sept. 1, 2010.
Born May 24, 1950, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Ruby Roach Dodson and Robert Mays Dodson Sr.
John is survived by his wife of 27 years, Rhonda Tyree Dodson; his children, Teresa Erickson and her husband, Chris, of Round Hill, John Dodson Jr. and his fianc‚ Lauren Proffitt, of Lynchburg, Colt Dodson, of Lynchburg, and Heather Dodson, of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Adrianna Erickson, Ethan Erickson and Emily Dodson; a sister, Donna Pallotti, of Amherst; and a lifelong friend, Jack Meeks.
John was a loving husband, an awesome father and grandfather. He loved to play music and could be counted on to always have a smile on his face. He always had a positive outlook on life because his belief was strong. He knew where he was going and was ready to go. John’s favorite pastime was texting with Jack. He will be missed.

Scott Michael Flanik, born Aug. 14, 1982, passed away peacefully on Sept. 7.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Adelaide Joyner Grillo Flanik, and grandparents Maurice and Frances Joyner Grillo, and William and Delphia (Bill and Kay) Flanik.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, George and Dorthea (Dot) Flanik, of Lynchburg.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Rebecca Ledingham, and son Joey, of Madison Heights; Lesley Moore and husband, Cameron, and their children, Amber, Alex, and Caitlin Moore, of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, William (Bill) Flanik, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; his aunt, Sally Flanik, and aunt and uncle Elizabeth and Dennis Skopik, and their three daughters and families.

Victoria Duff Hamilton, 86, of Monroe, died Sept. 5 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Correll Hamilton.
Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Violand and Etta Duff and was also preceded in death by one son, Mike Hamilton, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Mission and a former member of Elon Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Hamilton is survived by four children, Etta Mae H. Ethel May Harris, 87, of Evington, died Sept. 5 at The Carrington. She was the wife of the late Garland G. Harris. Born Jan. 2, 1923, in Concord, she was the daughter of the late Otis Booth and Lila Atwell Mills Booth.
Mrs. Harris was a retired seamstress for Dale Garment and a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by one son, Charles Luther Harris; one daughter-in-law, Peggy Harris; and eight siblings.
Mrs. Harris is survived by five children, Charlotte H. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Hurt and Susie White Hurt; two sisters; five brothers; Alfonso Mosby Hurt and a son, MSGT Harry L. Hurt Jr.
He leaves to mourn two daughters, Shirley Hurt Parker, of Amherst, and Linda Hurt Winfield, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one daughter-in-law, Teresa Hurt, of Ithaca, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Cynthia Parker Hood (Alvin), of Madison Heights, SSGT Terrence A. Hurt (Michelle), of Hawaii, Dana L. Hurt and Dianne Hurt Shrieves (William), both of Ithaca, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ellen Lucille Fulcher Mayberry, 79, of Madison Heights, passed away Sept. 2. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chat Mayberry Sr.
Born Feb. 26, 1931, in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Howard C. Fulcher and Lena Worley Fulcher. She was retired from G.E.
Survivors also include four children, Darlene Terry and husband, Lee, of Amherst, Brenda McFaden and husband, Harold, of Monroe, J.R. Mayberry and Joseph Mayberry Jr., both of Amherst; two sisters, Virginia Tyree, of Lynchburg, and Kathleen Chapman and husband, Jon, of Madison Heights; three brothers, Bill and Sonny Fulcher, both of Lynchburg, and Johnny Fulcher and wife, Gloria, of Madison Heights; sister-in-law, Ann Fulcher, of Madison Heights; four grandchildren, Troy McFaden, Chris Terry and wife, Liz, Jackie McFaden Gilreath and husband, Chad, and Greg Terry and wife, Laurie; and seven great-grandchildren.

Charles R. McClung
Charles R. McClung, 74, died Sept. 3 at The Carrington in Lynchburg. He was born Feb. 11, 1936, in Harrison County, Ga.
Charles was a long-time educator with Lynchburg City Schools, serving 25 years as principal of Paul Munro Elementary School. He retired in 1991.
He is survived by Carol Hannah; daughter, Fredia Britt, and husband, Frank, of Ivor; son, James Ruff, and wife, Sheri, of Madison Heights; Carol’s daughters, Sarah Gray, husband, Jeff, and children, Lance and Lily, and Amy Covington and husband, Chris; his sisters in Georgia, Laura Lee and husband, Heslip, Derelle Johnson and husband, Gus, Willie Bishop and husband, Denver, Lorene Coalson and husband, Charles, and Ann Johnson, and husband Albert; numerous nieces and nephews; and faithful dog, Skip.
Charles enjoyed his life, his work with the students and parents, and the many friends who remember him fondly.
He was predeceased by wife Annette Smith McClung and later by wife Nancy Striplin McClung; his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Charles requested that his body be donated for research and that no memorial service be held. The family would like to thank the staff of The Carrington for the care and concern given to Charles.

Edythe Martin Megginson
God has called another angel home. Edythe Martin Megginson, 91, of Appomattox, passed into eternal rest on Sept. 5 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Riley Thomas Megginson.
Born in Appomattox County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Marshall Martin and Ethel Tatum Martin. She was retired from Amelia Garment Company, where she worked for 40 years. Edythe’s love for God and her family showed in everything she did. A devout Christian, she was a faithful member of Mount Comfort United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and graduate of Appomattox High School.
Edythe is survived by a daughter, Virginia Kern, and her husband, John, of Forest; a son, R.T. Megginson Jr., and his wife, Patricia, of Appomattox; five grandchildren, John Thomas Kern III (Tommy) and his wife, Sharon, Penny M. Escobedo and her husband, Alex, Pam M. Mayberry and her husband, Greg, Vicki K. Garrett and her husband, Jerald, and Paula M. McNutt and her husband, Chris; seven great-grandchildren, Jerald and Jennifer Garrett, Heather and Chase Mayberry, Emily and Austin Escobedo and Ashton Kern. She is also survived by two brothers, Gordon Martin and his wife, JoAnne, of Gladstone, and Keith Martin and his wife, Eleanor, of Amherst; and a sister, June Martin Page, and her husband, Ray, of Appomattox.
One brother, James Martin, and two sisters, Mabel Hines and Lee Plunkett, preceded her in death.

Rev. Roy Saunders Newcomb
The Rev. Roy Saunders Newcomb, 86, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 5 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Lucille Ray Tuck Newcomb for 62 years.
Born Oct. 28, 1923, in Wylesburg, he was a son of the late James Henry and Janie Wilson Newcomb. Rev. Newcomb served 61 years in the ministry which consisted of evangelism, associate pastor of Blackstone Church of God, pastor of Amelia Church of God, pastor of Charlottesville Church of God and pastor for 29 years of Monroe Church of God, where he recently retired Aug. 15. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree May 31, 2002, from the Amherst County School of Theology and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by four sons, Roger S. Newcomb and wife, Peggy, and Ray Howard Newcomb and wife, Donna, both of Monroe, Clarence Lee Newcomb, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Bobby Stanley Newcomb and wife, Audrey, of Charlottesville; three daughters, Betty Ann Davis and husband, Eddie, of Blackstone, Dorothy Joan Gray and husband, David, and Nancy Umphlette, both of Monroe; three sisters, Janie Morris, of Victoria, Hazel Dawin, of Pamplin, and Mae Oquinn, of Drakes Branch; a brother, Paul Ray Newcomb, of North Carolina; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Maryland Newcomb, and 19 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 8 at the Monroe Church of God, with the Rev. Kenneth Alley and the Rev. Mitchell Corder officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post #16 of Lynchburg. The family received friends Sept. 7 at the Monroe Church of God.

Virginia May Eller Norris
Virginia May Eller Norris, 93, of Lynchburg, died Aug. 26 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of 53 years to the late Leonard Cleveland Norris. Born Feb. 11, 1917, in Wilkes County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Albert Eller and Geneva Bernice Franklin Eller Murray.
Mrs. Norris was a devoted wife, daughter and loving mother and blessed with two daughters. She was also a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Norris is preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Francis Eller, and one uncle, Ernest W. Franklin.
Mrs. Norris is survived by two daughters, Frances N. Cummings and her husband, Kraig, of Glen Allen, and Betty N. Roach and her husband, Bev, of Madison Heights; three grandchildren, Laurie Zaryczny and her husband, Joey, of Bedford, Carol Dillard and her husband, Keith, of Virginia Beach, and Kristie Lynn Roberts, of Lynchburg; eight great-grandchildren, Meghan and Nina Zaryczny, Kendall, Kyle and Cara Dillard, Tawnie and Andrea Phillips and Karlie Roberts.
A graveside service was conducted Aug. 31 at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with Dr. Robert Putt officiating.
The family received friends Aug. 30 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

Della Vest Rice
Della Vest Rice, 79, of Coleman Falls, died Aug. 26 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of Herbert Davis Rice Sr. for 58 years.
Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Vest Sr. and the late Isabelle Martin Vest. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Richard Preston “Pete” Rice; three brothers, James F. “Peanut” Vest, Andrew J. Vest Jr. and Homer Vest; and three sisters, Gracie V. Henson, Shelby Jean Vest and Virginia V. Booth.
Della was a faithful, long- time member of Cove United Methodist Church and was retired from Pearson’s Drug Store. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Curry Rice and his wife, Donna, of Coleman Falls, Claude “Boo” Rice and his wife, Sharon, of Monroe, and Ricky Rice and his wife, Karen, of Madison; seven grandchildren, Richie Rice, Wayne Rice and his wife, Samantha, Christine Rice, Brandon Rice, Amanda Rice, Ben Rice and Dakota Rice; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family expresses special thanks to her caretaker, Phyllis Miller, Guggenheimer Rehab Floor, Virginia Baptist Hospital English Staff, Centra Hospice and Dakota Rice.

Dorothy Ann Rosser
Dorothy Ann Rosser, 84, of Lynchburg, died Aug. 23 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born May 24, 1926, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Pearl Burks Rosser.
Dorothy was a retired self-employed house cleaner.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers, B.B. Rosser and Neville Rosser, and three sisters, Ruby D. Via, Earnestine Rosser and Virginia Rosser.
Dorothy is survived by one friend, Marian Fabrick, of New Jersey, and her family friends at the Grace Lodge.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Amherst Cemetery conducted by Minister Gwen Campbell.

John Allen Webb
John Allen Webb, 65, of Amherst, died Sept. 4 at Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was the beloved husband of Diana Seaward Webb.
Born April 12, 1945, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Romie Smith Webb and Laura Beatrice Smith Sterling. Mr. Webb was a retired salesman with Seaboard Bandag-White Tire Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Deer Park Baptist Church in Newport News.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Kimberly Webb, of Clermont, Fla., Andrea Griffith and husband, Sean, of Gloucester, Keith Webb and wife, Jaimie, of Newport News, Caryn Woolley, of Phoenix, Ariz., Deanna Cook and husband, Jason, of Lexingto, and Charles Woolley, of Houston, Texas; one sister, Christina Jennings, of Smithfield; a special niece, who Mr. Webb raised as a daughter, Monica Christiansen and husband, David, of Suffolk and 11 grandchildren.

Hubert Myers Williams Jr.
Hubert Myers Williams Jr., 77, of Madison Heights, went home to be with his Lord on Aug. 26 at Fairmont Crossing. He was the husband of the late Evelyn Williams for 51 years.
Born Oct. 21, 1932, in Big Island, he was the son of the late Hubert M. Williams Sr. and the late Irene Dawson Williams and was also preceded in death by one sister, Edith Fulks. He was retired from the Lynchburg Foundry with 52 years of service and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Mr. Williams is survived by one son, Larry M. Williams, and wife, Miracle, of Madison Heights; one brother, Robert Williams, and wife, Norma, of Big Island; two granddaughters, Sarah Skeens and husband, Josh, and Elizabeth Mawyer and husband, Mark; two great-grandchildren, Alana Williams and Levi Skeens; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted Aug. 30 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Naola, with the Rev. Peyton Fitzgerald officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Aug. 29 at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.
