Smoking marshmallows, flaming jars, and exploding balloons, are all part of the potions class at Ferrum College’s Hogwarts Summer Camp.
Head Mistress and world renowned Harry Potter expert, Lana Whited, teaches the course with chemistry professor, Jason Powell.
"They're just kind of getting a sense of what it's like to be in that kind of atmosphere. Potions in the Harry Potter books is kind of cross between chemistry and what they call herbology,” said Whited.
She was the very first person to write a harry potter collections of essays and is recognized for her expertise world wide..
Whited says the Harry Potter series is about more than wands and witch hats, it has a lot of academic value too.
"I think it's gotten a lot of children even more interested in reading, who've gone on to read other works,” said Whited.
The students in this class have read all the books, which total more than 5,000 pages of reading.
With the final movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two" coming out Friday, we asked Whited what it means now that the franchise is reaching its end.
"I think it's sad for us who've had the experience of going to the book store at midnight and waiting for the books to come out,” said Whited.
She added that Harry Potter's impact won't simply fade away. Whited calls it the "Star Wars" of this generation, and says Potter's impact will be felt by muggles young and old, for generations to come.
