Marie Griffin Argenbright

Marie Griffin Argenbright, 83, of Lynchburg, passed away Jan. 6.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Houston Argenbright Sr.

Born Feb. 24, 1928, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Eldridge Griffin and Charity Brooks Griffin.

She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Judith A. Avery and Annie A. Goodbar.

She was a member of New Beginning Tabernacle.

Survivors include eight children, George H. Argenbright Jr. and wife, Rita, Jesse Argenbright and wife, Judy, Kenneth W. Argenbright, Gary B. Argenbright and wife, Vicky, all of Madison Heights, Carolyn S. Linkous and husband, Mike, of Lynchburg, Rose L. Gilbert and husband, Jack, of Spotsylvania, Brenda F. Ayers and husband, Don, of Concord, and Thomas Griffin and wife, Sandy, of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Lillian Argenbright, of Appomattox; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; other relatives; and friends.

The family received friends Jan. 8 at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence of her son, Gary Argenbright, 115 4th St., in Madison Heights. A funeral service was conducted Jan. 9 at the funeral home by the Rev. Gary Moore. Interment followed in Spring Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

 

Larry Steven Baucom

Larry Steven Baucom, 73, of Forest, died Jan. 5. He was the beloved husband of Rhonda Breland Baucom. Larry was born Friday, Nov. 25, 1938 in Kannapolis, N.C., a son of the late Stanly Boyce Baucom and Ona Elizabeth Howard Baucom.

He proudly served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed by UYEMURA, USA where he was a technical sales representative. Larry was a passionate bass fisherman and an avid Harley rider who only knew one speed.

In addition to his spouse, he is survived by his four children, Glen Lee Baucom of Madison, N.C., Candice Rebekah of Jacksonville, N.C., Matison Brooke of Oxford, Miss., and Angela Leuck of Lovettsville; three brothers, Howard Baucom and Barbara, Round Hill, Phillip Baucom and Sharon, Clayton, N.C., and Kent Baucom, Gastonia, N.C.; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Jan. 8 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Larry’s life was conducted in the chapel at Tharp Funeral Home on Jan. 9 with the Rev. Phillip Baucom officiating. Interment followed in Virginia Memorial Park, with The Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors.

Deacon Massie Coles

Deacon Massie Coles, 93, of Amherst, passed away Jan. 9 at Fairmont Nursing Home, Amherst. He was born on March 24, 1918 to the late Duper and Fannie Martin Coles Jones. He was the husband of the late Margaret Taylor Coles and father of the late Peggy Weston.

He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Elburn Christian, Washington, D.C.; eight grandsons; three nephews, Kemper Smith Jr., Washington, D.C., Satchel Smith of Amherst, and Brandy (Shelly) Smith Jr; one niece, Marquetta Smith; devoted brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Percy (Kathleen) Taylor, Christine Smith and Mildred Carter, all of Amherst; two devoted cousins, Connie M. Rose and James (Rev. Pearlie) Sandidge, Amherst; a devoted friend, Carrie Braxton, Madison Heights; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service was held Jan. 14 at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church, Amherst. Interment was in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Taylor, of 158 Cabell Lane, in Amherst.

Russell Lynne Drewry

Russell Lynne Drewry, 64, of Madison Heights, went to be with The Lord, Jan. 9 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Linda Stinnett Drewry.

Born April 16, 1947 in Danville, he was the son of the late Russell Edward and Cornelia George Drewry and was also preceded in death by a brother, Gene Drewry; and a half-brother, Jerry Kirk.

Mr. Drewry was retired from Dodson Bros. Exterminating Company and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Drewry is survived by one daughter, Red Sayles and husband, Scott; one son, Brian Drewry and wife, Pam, both of Madison Heights; eight grandchildren, Adrian, Eva, Corbin, Elan, Quinn, Isley, Colton and Ella; two nephews, Christopher Drewry of Ocala, Fla., and Russell Drewry of New Orleans, La.; and a sister-in-law, Lorna Drewry of Ocala, Fla.

A funeral service was conducted Jan. 12 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Earl F. Clarkson Jr. officiating. Interment followed in Presbyterian Cemetery. The family received friends Jan. 11 at the funeral home.

June Smith French

On Jan. 10 Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, called his faithful servant, June French, home after an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Maurice French.

Born June 25, 1928 in Jenkinjones, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Faye S. Smith and was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. French was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.

Mrs. French is survived by two daughters, Connie F. Gunter and husband, Jimmy, of Madison Heights, and Lisa F. Wheeler and husband, Steve, of Amherst; four grandchildren, Kelly, Leigh Ann, Samantha and Taylor; and four great-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Katy, Adam and Michael.

A funeral service was conducted Jan. 12 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Michael Fitzgerald and the Rev. Terry Wornstaff officiating. Interment followed in Briarwood Memorial Gardens. The family received friends prior to the service.

Beatrice Stone Helm

Mrs. Beatrice Stone Helm departed this life Dec. 30 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born on Nov. 24, 1928 to the late John and Ida Stone.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four children, George, Deborah, Gwen and Floyd.

She was a faithful member of Spotswood Chapel Holiness Church in Hodges.

Beatrice is survived by her three children, John Helm of Madison Heights, Peggy Elliott of Lynchburg, and Troy Helm Sr. (Denise) of Evington; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Earl Hall of Bristol, Pa.; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, a devoted friend, Betty Jennings, and other friends.

A funeral service was held Jan. 5 at Spotswood Chapel Holiness Church, in Hodges, with Bishop Alon Coleman officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Her remains were in state prior to the service. The family received friends and the cortege assembled at 101 Old Court House Road, Lot 133.

Bonnie Keesee Jacobs-Murakami

Bonnie Keesee Jacobs-Murakami, 51, of Queen Valley, Ariz., died unexpectedly Dec. 25. Bonnie was the wife of Alan Y. Murakami. Born April 16, 1960, she was the daughter of the late Linda Murphy Keesee and granddaughter of the late Noel “Pete” and Ruth Murphy.

In addition to her husband, Bonnie is survived by four children, Nicole Cox, Christina Reeves and husband, Will, David Jacobs and Kimberly Jacobs, all whom live in Newark, Ohio; three sisters, Jeannette Conner and husband, Patrick, of Madison Heights, Beverly Alaeddin and husband, Saed, of Midlothian, and Darlene Humphrey and husband, Chuck, of Warrensburg, Mo.; and five grandchildren.

Bonnie was born and raised in Lynchburg, and later moved to Newark, Ohio. Bonnie will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

A memorial service for Bonnie was held in Queen Valley, Ariz., on Dec. 30.

 

Horace Meredith ‘Uncle’ Jones

On Jan. 8 God called from labor to reward the soul of Horace Meredith Jones “Uncle” of Amherst, formerly of Jersery City, N.J., where he lived all of his adult life, except for the past four years. He was born May 27, 1920 a son of the late George and Emma (Kidd) Jones.

“Uncle” was also preceded in death by his siblings, six brothers, Captain, John Billy, George (Toney), James (Byrd), Colonel and Leslie Jones; and three sisters, Beatrice Dean, Onie White and Josephine Jones.

He attended First Baptist Church Coolwell after relocating back home to Amherst.

“Uncle” is survived by his caretakers, niece, Shirley Smith, great-nephew, Brandon Giles and Amy Braxton; 13 nephews, Robert (Bunny) and Henry (Ruth) Jones of New Jersey, James, Samuel, Franklin, Larry, Willie (Pudding), Rueben (Daisy), John Leslie, Lewis “Squeaky” (Betty) Jones, of Amherst, Earl (Lisa), William (Regeana) Jones, of Maryland, and Sherwood Jones of Madison Heights; 10 nieces, Betty (Paul) Blair of Washington, D.C., Martha (Cephus) Witt of Maryland, Mary (Aaron) Rucker, of Evington, Pauline Jones and Grenda (John) Wilkes, of Lynchburg, Alberta Sandidge, Shirley Smith and Dorothy Johnson, of Amherst, Bertha (Larry) Beverly and Annie Moss of Madison Heights; two sisters-in-law, Edith Jones and Nancy Donigan, of Amherst; and a host of great-great-nieces and -nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held Jan. 12 at First Baptist Church, Coolwell, with the Rev. Charles Frye officiating. The interment was in the church cemetery.

Margaret Jean Coffey Kilbourn

Margaret Jean Coffey Kilbourn, 84, of 100 Eastward Drive, Altavista, died Jan. 7 at Gretna Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 20, 1927 in Amherst County, a daughter of the late William H. and Gladys Sallie Eubank Coffey.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church, a retired teller with PNC Bank and a volunteer of the Altavista EMS Thrift Store for 18 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Kilbourn and daughter-in-law, Tamara Barbour, of Altavista, and Mary Redlus and son-in-law, Stanley, of Wainscott, N.Y.; a son, James Kilbourn Jr. of Shelby, N.C.; four grandsons, Matthew and Christopher Kilbourn, both of Howard, S.D., and Steven and Seth Redlus, both of East Hampton, N.Y.; a great-granddaughter, Lisa Ditto of Lynchburg; three great-great-grandchildren, Brandy, Kaleigh and Jr. Ditto. all of Lynchburg; and a special friend, Jane Barbour of Altavista.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William H. Coffey Jr. and a daughter-in-law, Maggie Kilbourn.

A funeral service was conducted Jan. 11 at Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista, by the Rev. Michael Duncan. The family received friends at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista, and other times at the residence.

Patricia Miller Pritchett

Patricia Miller Pritchett, 70, formerly of Madison Heights, passed away Jan. 9 at her daughter’s residence in Charlotte, N.C. She was the wife of the late Donald Ray Pritchett.

Born April 24, 1941 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lacy and Frances Hamilton Miller and was also preceded in death by a brother, Lee Miller.

Mrs. Pritchett was a former employee of Old Dominion Box Company.

Mrs. Pritchett is survived by one son, Kenneth Pritchett and wife, Brenda, of Madison heights; two daughters, Laura Bolling and husband, Jeff, of Denton, Texas, and Tammy Itara and husband, Harold, of Charlotte, N.C.; five brothers, Dennis Miller, Ernie Miller, Jimmy Miller and Kenny Miller, all of Madison Heights, and Paul Miller and wife, Betty of Lynchburg; two sisters, Linda Brizendine of Madison Heights, and Sue Matherly and husband, Wendell, of Gladys; and four grandchildren, Logan Bolling, Wyatt Bolling, Avery Bolling and Megan Itara.

A graveside service was conducted Jan. 12 in Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Earl F. Clarkson Jr. officiating. The family received friends Jan. 11 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

 

Carolyn Oakes Randall

Carolyn Oakes Randall, 51, of Virginia Ave., Brookneal passed away Dec. 20 at home. She was the wife of James Joseph Randall. Mrs. Randall was born in Lynchburg, March 7, 1960 a daughter of James Otis Oakes of Danville, Pa., and the late Rachel Johnson Oakes.

She was a member of Brookneal Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Lynchburg Health and Rehab Center.

In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by two daughters, Jenny Lee Walker (Anthony) of Rustburg, and Donna Jo Hurren of Amherst; two brothers, Otis Oakes of Brookneal, and Danny Oakes of Williamsport, Pa.; and one sister, Jessie Epperson of Concord.

Sheila Yvonne Reynolds

Sheila Yvonne Reynolds, 60, of Madison Heights, passed away Jan. 1 at her residence. Sheila was born April 12, 1951 in Emporia, the daughter of the late Floyd Thomas and Frances Sessler Reynolds.

She is survived by five sisters, Sylvia J. Reynolds and Sandra Angus, both of Madison Heights, Cynthia Wright of Amherst County, Shirley Ashwell of Rustburg, and Sharon Caler of Appomattox; a host of nieces and nephews; and her dog, Buster.

The family received friends Jan. 6 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

 

Leroy Dump Smith ‘King Fish’

Leroy Dump Smith “King Fish” of Amherst, departed this life in January at his residence. He was born Jan. 25, 1953 in Amherst.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Sarah Chisley of Madison Heights; two sisters, Cassandra Chisley, of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Cynthia Brown, of Flint, Michigan; three aunts, Mary Jane Frederick (Herman) of Madison Heights, Althea Rice “devoted aunt who was like a mother to him,” and Fannie Sandidge of Amherst; nine great-aunts; two uncles; three great-uncles; stepfather, Clinton Chisley; and one aunt, Charmy Martin that preceded him in death; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held Jan. 7 at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, Amherst, with the Rev. Rodney Sandidge as eulogist. The interment was in the church cemetery. The family received friends at New Jerusalem Baptist church in Amherst, and other times at 172 Izaak Road in Madison Heights.

Deacon James H. Wyatt

Deacon James Henry Wyatt, of Charlotte Court House, passed away Jan. 7 at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He was the son of the late Mr. Henry and Lizzie Cabell Wyatt and was married to Mrs. Pearl Braxton Wyatt.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Teresa Wyatt of Richmond; sons, Stephen (Kim) Wyatt of Monroe, and Jeffrey Wyatt of Richmond; five grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Robertson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at the Nazareth Baptist Church in Phenix with interment in the church cemetery.
