The Town of Amherst is considering hiring a company that would encourage industrial development by building business structures and handling the planning and engineering processes for them.
The town would pay $18,000 annually for three years to the Clinton, Tenn.-based Hollingsworth Co.
The town’s Industrial Development Authority recommended this week to proceed with the plan, and Town Council will hold a public hearing next month before deciding whether to go through with the plan.
The advantage would be that the company would provide build-to-suit planning and readiness within 180 days at the L. Barnes Brockman Industrial Park off U.S. 60 east and provide national marketing and financing options.
The plan would include civil engineering design and construction plans for prospective tenants, and the company would assume responsibility for maintenance.
The company also would be granted an option to buy the land, divided into two lots. One lot would be for the design of a virtually complete building, and the other would be for a build-to-suit project.
Hollingsworth has nearly 50 clients, including Northrop Grumman, Walmart and Xerox, and is involved with more than 30 communities.
Also, the company will promote the town’s industrial availability at trade shows throughout the United States, said the town manager, Jack Hobbs.
The town formerly entered into an agreement with Lee Cobb, an well-known regional economic development adviser, to market the Brockman Park to potential tenants, and Cobb also is a proponent of this plan.
Current tenants are Mutual Telecom Services Inc. and Centra’s Fairmont Crossing.
