Work under way on Amherst town budget

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

The Amherst Town Council has approved its calendar for preparation of the 2012-13 budget.

This year’s budget was $3.2 million, and the town isn’t affected as much by the state budget as the county and public school district.

“That being said, our problems are more in the water and sewer area,” said the town manager, Jack Hobbs. “We haven’t been able to generate enough revenue” for improvements and construction, he said.

Not only are revenues are flat, but also costs are rising, for the Virginia Retirement System, health care and electricity, he said.

“You take the state of the economy, the state budget and (property) reassessments, and that’s a lot to absorb,” he said.

Under the town’s budget calendar, various departments will submit budget proposals, which should be delivered by March 14.

The full budget proposal will be published and delivered March 30.

A budget hearing is scheduled for May 9, and the budget is scheduled to be approved June 13.
