Families, employees react to closing of Central Virginia Training Center

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

After an agreement between the Department of Justice and the Commonwealth, four of Virginia's five training centers will close.

The centers serve people who are mentally or physically disabled in our area.

The Central Virginia Training Center in Amherst County is included in the agreement. It is set to close in 2020.

A meeting was held for employees this morning (Thursday), about the transition.

"We are upset," said Richard Idore, who has worked at the center for four years. "Most of these people will be out of job. They've got nowhere to go."

Meanwhile, families of some of the patients tell us they are also upset.

"This is her home. She's interacting with the staff as if they are family members. She smiles at them. They've given their time and life for her care," said Atul Gupta, who's daughter has lived at the facility for eight years.
