Lancers lose in pitcher's duel

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

Rustburg’s baseball team scored two-out, unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh and 11th innings to tie Amherst at 1-1 and beat the Lancers 2-1 Monday night at home in a Seminole District duel rescheduled from last Wednesday.

The two teams’ four pitchers combined for 38 strikeouts — 22 by Red Devils starter Chris Walker (11 in six innings) and reliever Brandon West, who got the win, fanning 11 in five, and 16 by Lancers starter Dakota Stinnett (10 in seven innings) and reliever Britt Ashwell (six in 3 2/3). That topped the 36 recorded in a 10-inning complete-game gem between Rustburg’s Blake Forslund (20) and Appomattox’s Tim Dudley (16) two years ago.

“There were 38 strikeouts out of 65 outs, so over half of the outs were by strikeout,” Red Devils coach Barry Godsey said.

Rustburg (5-0, 2-0 Seminole) managed just five hits, including a double and run by West in the seventh. West also put the ball in play on the error that scored the winning run in the 11th.
