Amherst’s boys and girls track teams had a solid performance over the weekend at the Vince Bradford Relays at E.C. Glass High School. Most of the area’s local teams were represented and the Lancer girls team finished sixth out of 19 teams, scoring 31 points. The boys’ team finished eighth out of 18 teams, scoring 25 points.
The girls were led by Candace Davis’ strong performances in the long and triple jumps. The senior placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, one-half inch. Davis finished second in the long jump by jumping 15 feet, 8 inches.
Other top 10 finishers included Kyle’s eighth place finish in the 100 meter dash (13.17), Danielle Granger’s eighth place finish in the 100 hurdles (18.91), the 400 relay team’s sixth place in 52.27 (Davis, Terri Elliott, Kyle, Olivia Turner), the 1,600 relay team’s fourth-place finish in 4:20.44 (Turner, Davis, Kyle, Jessie Schnurer), Turner’s eighth-place finish in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches), Joni McGinn’s second place in the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches), Emily Moore’s ninth-place finish in the pole vault (7 feet, 6 inches), Kyle’s fifth-place finish in the triple jump (33-6), Jasmine Haskins ninth-place finish in the triple jump (30-2) and Summer Johnson’s ninth place finish in the discus (86-3).
The Lancers’ girls’ JV team also got in on the fun with Julia Ayau’s ninth place finish in the 1,600 (6:18.39).
The boys’ team was led by Terrance Morse’s first place finish in the 100. The junior’s time of 11.08 seconds was not only good enough to win the event but qualify for the Group AA state track meet later this year.
Other top 10 finishes include Anthony Ware’s ninth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (17.21), the 800 relay team’s seventh-place finish in 1:37.56 (Jamar Glover, Jamal Glover, Thomas Sandidge, Anthony Rose), the 1,600 relay team’s fourth-place finish in 3:33.49 (Morse, James Hutchinson, Sandidge, Chris McDaniel), Rose’s fourth-place finish in the high jump (5-8), Jaze Spradley’s fifth-place finish in the pole vault (11-6), Damien Chilten’s third-place finish in the triple jump (43-5), Demetrius Irving’s eighth-place finish in the triple jump (40-7.5), McDaniel’s 10th-place finish in the triple jump (40-0.5) and Devonte Brown’s eighth-place finish in the shot put (46-1.5),
