Sweet Briar’s Katelyn Jones was all smiles after scoring the winning run against Penn State Altoona in the seventh inning on March 7.
Sweet Briar College’s softball team defeated Penn State Altoona 5-4 Saturday at home.
In the bottom of the third inning, trailing 3-0, Sweet Briar’s Jordan Pugh (’11, Afton) got a 1-out single to score senior Melissa Viar (Madison Heights) and made it 3-1 after three innings.
Altoona got the run back in the top of the 4th inning and led 4-1.
Anna Newberg (’11/New Britain, Conn.) replaced starting pitcher sophomore Megan Franklin (Powhatan) to start the 7th inning and shut them down facing three batters and striking out two of them.
Going into the bottom of the 7th trailing 4-1, Viar reached due to a throwing error by the third baseman.
With one out, Jordan Pugh hit an RBI double to score Viar, cutting the lead to 2.
First-year player Mattie Witt (Bedford) grounded to the shortstop, who tagged out Pugh, who was off the bag at second.
With the score 4-2 with two outs and Mattie Witt on first, she stole second.
An RBI single by Christen Campbell (’12, Appomattox) made it 4-3.
A single by Katelyn Jones (’12, Advance, N.C.) moved Campbell, the tying run, to second and put the winning run on first.
Blair Passagaluppi (’12, Tappahannock) came to the plate with runners on first and second and two out.
Passagaluppi hit a short pop-up to the third baseman, which should have been the third out, but she dropped it and the runners advanced.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Vixen Sarah Maroney (’10, Santa Clarita, Calif.), who was 0-3 at the time, hit a 2-RBI double and the Vixens came from behind to win their first game of the season.
Anna Newberg got the win, pitching one inning of relief.
In game two, the Lions won 7-3.
