The Amherst County Lancers took on the undefeated Jefferson Forest Cavaliers in a Seminole District boy’s soccer match on April 28 at Sabre Stadium. The Cavaliers came out with a 1-0 victory over the Lancers.
The Lancers came out determined to earn some respect, not only from the Cavaliers, but from around the Seminole. The Cavaliers came out aggressively and controlled possession early. David Rochow, who plans to attend Virginia Military Institute, controlled the ball in the midfield for the Cavaliers. He controlled the pace and distributed the ball to teammates David Jackson and Andrew Dempsey, who just weren’t able to find the net.
Defense was key for the Lancers. Led by senior Tyler Frazier, the defense made great stops and recoveries in the first half.
“I thought our defense really kept us in the game in the first half” said head coach Tom McBride. He said that goalkeeper Andrew Bray also had some remarkable saves.
Rochow did find a small crease in the Lancer defense however. In the 56th minute of the game, Rochow took a pass from midfield, dribbled through the Lancer defense and scored the only goal.
Amherst put a bit of a scare into the Cavaliers and their fans late in the game, as Matt Payne got free and sent a cross into the middle that Ryan Pigg went up and connected with, but it went just wide of the net.
